Stromung too Loud after Euro Headers install?

Hi All,
So I've had Stromung exhaust installed on my stock M Roady for a few months, and love the sound. Nice and sporty but not too loud. Last week I had Euro headers installed. My immediate observation- significant power increase, and significant noise increase! I am surprised by how much louder this car is with oem Euro headers added. I suppose that illustrates how restrictive the NA header is.
Is this an observation most make as well?

So now I'm in a quandary. The car is a bit too loud for me, especially from 2-3k. Clearly I am not removing the euro headers, so I'm looking to replace the Stromungs. The only option seems to be Remus for reduced noise.

Anyone have any experience with Remus with Euro headers? Thoughts?

There is a guy that went from Stromung to Remus and posted videos about it on this forum. There is also a comparison thread with different exhaust setups and how loud they are, decibel levels with video.

I have headers, x-pipe and stromung exhaust. How many miles on your exhaust? They mellow out a little bit with use. I think going to remus it will sound too quiet but everyone has their preference. For reference I don't like loud fart can exhaust but this setup I have is deep and perfect for me.

The Stromung was used, so it was fully broken in. I know sound is subjective, but the drone is a bit much for me. The line between aggressive and drone is thin I suppose.

Any link for the Remus guy you mentioned? I've seen his YouTube vids I think. Would love to hear his insight.

Your only two options are Remus or stock.

As a side note, if you were to ever move to a catless / high flow catted s-pipe, your volume increase would be one order of magnitude louder still. For some reason, stock NA headers + catless s-pipe doesn't provide nearly the volume increase of catless headers + stock s-pipe... But having both catless headers + s-pipe makes the car significantly louder. With a full catless setup, some of us that like loud exhausts can't stand any kind of race-labeled mufflers. I just ordered a set of Supersprint Powerloops to replace my Supersprint Race mufflers.

The same volume increase happens on non-M's. When I installed the SS y-pipe and race exhaust but kept the OEM headers, the end result was pretty tame. When I moved to catless headers, the volume more than doubled.

Pokey- thanks for your insight. As you mentioned, stock or Remus are likely my only options, and I can't see going back to stock. For weight reasons alone, if nothing else, I'll try Remus.

Interesting observations on the catless header / s-pipe. Needless to say I am not interested in any magnitudes louder

My worst fear would be to go to all the trouble of swapping to Remus and having no reduction of drone.

Remus isn't that lightweight either. If I recalled, Remus is only about 3 lbs lighter than stock per side.

^really? That's disappointing if true. Must be from all the extra sound deadening material, lol.

Stromung felt significantly lighter then lead-like oem canisters.

If you end up selling the Stromung, please let me know. I might be interested in them.

^Will do. I don't anticipate having any issues moving a used set of Stromungs. I waited over a year to find a used pair for myself.

Ideally I would like to orchestrate a trade (plus cash?) for a Remus exhaust.

Ideally, that's probably what I'd do, yes. However, I don't see too many Remus setups come up for sale very often.

For what it's worth, the volume of my Stromung exhaust also increased after swapping intake only (AFE to Eventuri).

I saw a similar order of magnitude increase in noise when I installed freer-flowing headers on my FR-S. Suffice to say, it comes with the territory. As a weekend/fun car I think the noise is just fine, for a daily it's too intrusive.

I have Stromungs which have a great tone, with 86zed's old AFE and I wish it were a little louder

Another option would be SS power loops.

I just have a hard time justifying the cost of the SS Powerloops because I've read that they're pretty similar to the Stromungs. If I'm not mistaken, you can buy a new set of Stromung for almost $500 cheaper than used SS PL.

If you're lucky, the power loops come up FS once in a while.
I'm on Stromung now with headers, but had power loops on my previous M Roady.
The power loops are much more 'sophisticated' sounding than Stromung.
nice low base tone & quieter. The loop back seems to tame any drone as well.

I agree though re the cost, unless you can fnd a deal on a used set.

Also have Stromung, have Euro headers soon to be installed (if I ever just do it), hoping I don't find that after I do it the volume is too much. As already said, sound volume and it being too much depends on the person, also hoping the OP and his Roadster is louder to the driver than the Coupe.

I'm surprised more people don't order from Schmiedmann. I got my Powerloops for $1500 shipped. They have the best prices on Supersprint and Eisenmann products.

Got my SS S pipe and muffler shipped direct from Europe through Scheidmann. Cost me less all in than the muffler would have cost me from a U.S based supplier.

Shipping took around a week from the date that Schmiedmann received it from Italy.

Ugh, this is the dilemma I'm in right now. I have stock headers, but RE S/Xpipes and the Stromung exhaust. I LOVE the way the car sounds, in fact, it's the first BMW engine six cylinder I like! There's no rasp, there's pops all over the place once I take my foot of the gas, and you can even "burble" the exhaust a bit if you just stab the gas pedal for an instant, it's a hoot!

I've had my eye on headers forever, but if I go straight through I think it's going to sound really obnoxious. As well, from what I've seen on youtube, these cars just don't sound very good with straight through as the rasp seems to come back in a big way. If my car is going to be that loud, it better be fast too. Nothing is worse than a loud slow ass car, so I'd need to be supercharged before ever considering going with a straight through setup.

I'm thinking about leaving well enough alone and using the headers/tune money towards an eventual supercharger purchase. I just think at this point I'm married to this car (I love it, and what else can you get under $50k that even comes close?) so I'm thinking long term.

Good luck OP, let us know how it goes!

NickyC, years later after thinking you'd sell it, I still catch you bragging about your sweet ride! I'm glad you didn't sell it man.

I have RPI scoop, Euro headers, DKF S-Pipe, stock X-Pipe, and RDSport exhaust. I love how my car sounds inside the cabin, specially in low RPM's (almost like a 8cyl) but I feel like it's not loud enough. I plan on getting Eventuri/M-Gruppe intake and a tune. That should make the engine sound louder but if I get the Rogue Engineering X-Pipe, does anyone know if removing the resonator will give me more sound and power?
