It finally happened...
Well my tire pressure warning came on this morning while I was out for a short drive. I stopped and checked the tire pressures and my rear driver side pressure was down to about 28 PSI (Recommend: 39 PSI). Inspected the tire and found a nail in it. Looks like it occured some time in the past 2 days and has been a slow leak.
So I am contemplating getting it just fixed at a reputable tire place if possible. It is in the tread area and > 1" from the outer tread lines. I didn't run on them with no pressure or too low of a pressure so the side walls should still be in good condition and am hoping the tire is fixable. If not I'd have to dish out $330 for a new RFT tire!!! I have heard the stock RFT's wear out < 20k miles. So this may be my chance to switch out all 4 tires for non RFT's. I have heard a lot about the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 and Michelin Pilot Sport PS2, but I found the Sumitomo HTR Z III on tirerack.com and they have a pretty good tirerack rating as well as user reviews (?? comparable to the F1 and PS2). Plus the whole set of 4 would cost me < $600 . I lease my Z4 and figure I can just toss on the RFTs when my lease is up instead of potentially having to replace all 4 RFTs due to treadwear by the time my lease is up (4 x $330 = $1320). http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....=(Y)&minLoad=S Any one here have any personal experience with having had RFT's fixed? Any one with any info regarding the Sumitomo HTR Z III tires? Any other helpful comments would be appreciated. TIA. |

Had this exact same thing happen within the first 1200 miles I had my '07 coupe. Drove down to the local tire shop - Off, patched, on, 15 minutes and 20 bucks later I'm out the door and fine ever since. Unless you're near the point where you're going to replace the tire anyway just get it patched and forget about it.

Had the same thing happen to me, driver side rear. Sidewall puncture so it was unrepairable. Picked up a set of Toyo T1R, have the other 3 Bridgestone RFT in my garage.

A patch will last as long as the tire lasts usually. They are not a 'temporary' fix as some thing.

Trust me - get rid of the RFT's ***NOW***. It WILL be the best $$ you ever spend on your car, you'll be back here thanking me and raving about the improvements in handling, comfort, turn-in, and probably even a reduction in global warming and worldwide hunger. RFT's are the devil, anyone who's had them then come back from the dark side on the same car has the EXACT same experience.
I rented a turd of a Pontiac G6 while in SoCal the past few days. The multifunction display tells you exact PSI at each corner. If GM can put that in this rolling embarrassment, then why can't BMW give us that functionality, rather than just a cheesy idiot light that comes on after a huge amount of pressure is already gone? Riddle me that, Batman.

I just dumped the RFT's on my 07 Coupe...Kevin C's right, easily the best $$ I have spent on the car...went with Yoko S.drive, very, very happy, the improvement in ride quality is practically beyond measure, have heard great things about the Goodyear F1's, unfortunately the rear's were out of stock when I made the switch (apparently Goodyear ran out but has scheduled a production run soon)...good luck

As soon as the ice age passes I am getting some new wraps... But as long as it is -44 degrees with windchill and we get 13 inches of snow in 24 hours (last tuesday) there is no need.
Come on summer!

Some troll @ Firestone tried to tell me my Toyo's are junk and the OE 18's will perform better with the Bridgestone RFTs. Then proceeded to say I was fortunate to find a company that would do the dangerous act of putting the Toyos on my rims.

you CAN patch run flats just like regular tires if you don't need to spend money on tires yet, just keep em till it wears out. why spend $1000 when u got a perfectly good tire? Stock RFT RE050A's are sticky enough. but when it comes to getting a new tire, of course the non-RFT's

Well took the car in today during my lunch break (it's one of the authorized installer's for Tire Rack and very reputable place with good customer satisfaction around here). They took close to an hour but they patched it. They said they had to take a litte extra time and caution it being a low profile tire... anyway an hour later and only $21 less I was ready to go. I am still planning to switch over to non-rft's and will give the Sumitomo HTR Z III a try, but will wait until I put a little more wear on the RFT's first.
Thanks to all for your input. |

Sumitomo = made in china crap.
GoodYear F1 from personal experience are horrible in the rain. No wet grip whatsoever. I'd take the Michelins over the Goodyears. Personal favourite right now is the Nitto Invo.
