M Backing plates for brake cooling & bumper inlet
For those that have purchased backing plates for brake cooling, what have you done?
In looking around its hard to tell what will fit Brakes and rotors are E46M3, but the struts are E36M3. What have you found that works and doesn't cost an arm and a leg (no CF) If you came up with a DIY plate, what did you run up against?

^thanks, I saw that.
The M has a different knuckle. (not E46 or E36) Its like the E46 in some ways but like the E36 in others. longress looked up the OE backing plates and the Z4M shares the same part # as the E46M with Competition package. Then in this post from O-cha, he tried an E46 plate and it didn't fit. (but didn't say why......) http://www.zpost.com/forums/showpost...7&postcount=10 I think the problem comes in at the top mounting hole. E36M cooling plates don't have an extension for the top bolt, E46M does have an extension. Probably looking at a little tweeking either way.

more info....
digging a little deeper, its possible that there are clearance differences for the hose thimble.
The E46M3 has no lower strut bolts, so there may be more clearance for the thimble to come straight out. eg this plate from Hard Motorsport vs this one for the E36M3 you can see in these pics how the thimble comes off the E36M3 plate on an angle to clear the lower strut bolt. Right now I'm leaning towards the E36M3 plates as the best fit. Note; I'm also looking at the HARD Motorsport plates as they are designed for a BBK with 355mm rotor. They provide a little more shielding of the lower steering ball joint & the damper as well (keep the damper oil as cool as possible) I will post more when I get a chance to test fit.

very interested in this one..... need to make this swap myself, please keep us updated!! having hd a good look at mine, it seems to me that the e46 unit would work also but i see what u mean about the way the e36 unit is shaped...

Also need to look further into the BBK mounts.
From this pic the plate stops before the mount bracket. There must be interference with the bracket that it cant extend further. On the E46M plate in post #5 above, it looks like its designed to extend all the way to the caliper. In order to do this the caliper bracket would need to be behind the plate. .....more investigation definitely required as there will also be variances depending on mfg. Safe to say though that there will be some compromise either way.

Bumper inlet...
I've also been poking around for a good bumper inlet solution.
Instead of a plain 3" flange, I started thinking about velocity stacks for a better flow & cool look. Wasn't having a lot of luck, then thought about a base port speaker tube. Seems to be a few options out there..... E.g.

Ian, how about using the OEM scoops in the bumper? would look much nicer and the ram effect would also be a bonus.. You would just need to manufacture something that does the job behind the bumper. possibly modify/delete the black oem inserts behind the scoops..

the stock "brake vents" are useless.... they are good for cooling the edge of the tyre and thats it... lol!
Shame really because if their was space behind them to somehow connect a hose and run it to the brakes that would be a perfect solution but, their is no where near the required space, on this car at least these lower cooling vents are purely cosmetic. what we need is someone to manufacture some proper brake deflectors that bolt onto the control arms a La GT3s etc. however with those backing plates, and some proper bumper inlets, we could a solution thats worthy of any Gt3 :-)

As soon as we discover which backing plate is needed ill jump into this... being in the UK make it harder for me as id normally just order both and give them both a try.

Part of the problem is that all the support for that OE funnel is at the back , so if you cut it off to integrate the hose connection you lose the OE support. ......still haven't ruled it out though.

On my research, ive also seen comments regarding hose size.
All these kits and backing plates are based on 3" hose. I have seen discussion on whether 3" is appropriate for our type of use, if not a full blown track beast. With a BBK and track pads you need a good amount of heat to have them in the proper operating range. If you cool them too much you won't get proper pad transfer, will not brake as well and wear the rotors more...... Though was that 2 - 2.5" might be more appropriate ?????? 3002 tii ; you've been running yours for a while now. Any credence to this line of thinking?

inTgr8r, I spent quite a bit of time thinking about flange options and the speaker port never crossed my mind, great find! The only concern I have is the outer flange on the 3" port is 6" in diameter making it a challenge with fitting.
I don't have a BBK on the car yet so I ordered the M3 backing plate from Hard Motorsport. There's a couple issues right off the bat with this. The rotors on the M3 (non CSL) are 20mm smaller in diameter than our cars so I don't think this plate will cover the entire rotor disc. The other issue is the M3 steering knuckle and how the strut mounts. The difference is in the top backing plate mounting bolt up area. On the M3 it's set back where our knuckles are flush where the top bolt mounts. The M3 plates will have to have the bracket cut off and another hole drilled in order to mount to our knuckle. |

The part I'm most interested in is clearance for the hose thimble coming straight out. If the thimble clears I'll order the plate E46M for BBK. If necessary I'll trim the plate to fit around the caliper bracket. Re the base port, there are lots of different types out there that you can look at. I was considering the flangeless type to save space and epoxy weld it in from the back.
