Looking at a 2004 Z4 - $12k good price?
I am looking at an 04 Z4 for $12k. Mileage is close to 70k. Looks to be in decent shape, minor dings and scratches here and there. Mechanically in good shape.
My main concern is should I jump on this or spend 3-4k more and get something newer? |

Here in CA that's a fair price for a lower mileage Z (lower miles for the year). If it has been taken care of then there's no need to go newer.
Now if you're looking to go newer to get a 3.0 ok, but the 2.5i m54 is very reliable. I have about 110,000 miles right now on mine and commute 300-350 miles a week with no problems and 30+ mpgs.

Is it a 2.5 or 3.0? Sport package? Things like that will help to determine if it is a better deal or not. I bought my 04 last year and paid more than that here in MO, but they are harder to find here, mine is a 3.0 with 60K miles and had the sport package. Car was in excellent shape, so I did not mind paying basically full retail for it. It was the color, interior, transmission, and wheels that I wanted - I only had to give up on the year. I wanted a April 2004 or later build date as that gave you the remote top function and this car is a March build date - but I added the smart top controller and have it all now. Love the car and glad I paid a little extra to get all the things I wanted. I forgot about the little extra on the way home! =)

Pretty much would echo what was stated above. Newer isn't going to be better unless it's a color combo or a different engine/suspension. BTW, for 4K, you can put a hell of a suspension on that which will outclass and outperform the stock one anyway. I'd save the money and put a bit into cosmetic surgery (dings, chips) and other things such as new bushings, new springs/shocks, wheels, tires, etc.
