it was a definitive click upon heavy acceleration, or an agressive downshift

a click? from the rear? Was it more of thud? If its a click, i dont think thats normal cause my car never did that.

I never noticed any noises from the diff under acceleration. Shifting into first you can usually hear a click or thud...but that's just the gearbox. Maybe you're hearing chirps from the tires back there?

Edit...I do remember hearing clicks fromt he DSC trying to keep my wheels from spinning.

i dunno, it was a definite click, a sharper sound than a thud, and it did it form day one, so i fugured it was the "acoustical feedback" mentioned in the manual, but now its gone, could have something to do w. the gearbox, which BMW NA is replacing on thursday, but where there once was a noise, now there is none!

Sounds kinda like the second gear issues I had at first, but have slowly gone away. Never does it to me anymore.

when the dealer swapped my tranny, he said he has suspicions about the diff being bad as weel, but i didnt even mention my own suspicions, he came right out w. it, he said he will investigate when my lower control arm goes in in coming weeks. start rolling in 1st, then really stomp it. if you dont hear a click and a pop, have your dealer check it out, its mentioned as "acoustic feedback" in that little ///M pamphlet they give you! i cant thin of what else they might mean

If you don't hear something, there might be something wrong??? That's a first.
