another intermitant starting issue
Hi guys,
My 06 z4MC has started not starting... it seems like it might be heat related, but I am not sure. Basically it either starts up no problem, or I turn the key and it "pops" under the hood, its like an electronic snap, but the starter doesnt move. To me it sounds like a bad starter or solenoid since the signal is getting under the hood. If I turn the key without the clutch down, it does nothing, with the clutch engaged it "pops" under the hood. Any thoughts? thanks!

Check the wiring to make sure everything is making good contact.
If that looks OK, sounds like typical solenoid failure. Comes as one piece starter + solenoid. |

do you have a clutch stop? this burned me last summer....
basically, it mimics the issue you are having. car will start fine in a cool spot or garage, and once sitting in the heat of the day, the rubber expands to the point where your foot travel is not enough to satisfy the clutch switch. The starter won't turn. |

thanks for the replies guys!
It doesnt do anything If I dont push the clutch in. no click no pop, no nothing. Ill see if I can get it to act up again, and look at that clutch stop though (I dont have an after market one).

if you dont have an after market one that is taller, then that wont be the issue.
sounds more like wiring (corrosion, high resistive contact) or starter/solonoid issue to me

It doesn't sound like it's the problem, but it couldn't hurt to try the other key.

I just replaced the starter with a little help from this thread. So far that seems to have been the problem. Thanks for all the suggestions!
