oil change reset, yes or no?
I just scanned several older messages about oil changes and have a question.
A poster recommended that you not reset the oil change monitor, if you're changing oil more frequently than recommended. (i.e., I'm doing a change at 7,500 miles). Is there a reason for this? Thanks Bruce |

I don't change mine. Unless the warning turns on. I only have 12k ont car, and I've changed the oil 3 times in 1.5 years of ownership. Only reset my indicator once when it came up

Yaarp. You're changing the oil in addition to the factory recommended intervals. The indicator is only for keeping track of the factory intervals (oil and inspections every ~ 15kmi).

As stated above you don't reset it because you don't need to do the Inspections any more often. You're just doing an oil change in between:
Instead of: Inspection 1 -> Oil -> Inspection 2 -> Oil... You're doing: Inspection 1 -> Oil -> Oil -> Inspection 2... If you reset it, you'd end up doing your inspections also at half interval, which is unnecessary and expensive.

Oil change
Thanks for the explanation.
I sent off a sample to blackstone for analysis. I'll post it here if there's anything interesting to report. Bruce K. |

On a related note. I had a local indy shop do my Inspection one at about 27,600 miles. I'm at 35,000 miles now and the car is saying another 5K miles to next service (and from what I know that's a "shrinking" 5K miles).
The car gets driven in 1/2 hour to 40 minute doses. 60% of the mileage is highway. I'm a little surprised that I'll have to do Inspection II (and valves again) at less than 40K miles. Does this sound normal? Thx. |

- Specifically for a Z4M, are there different Oil Service/Inspection resets that are done? By this I mean after inspection I is completed is the reset that should be performed specific to just an oil service, and then after that oil service is completed (roughly 12K miles later) should a specific Inspection II reset performed? - If there are different resets, what do the reset indicators say? - If there are different resets, what is the difference (if any) between what is monitored during the two reset periods After doing some web searching I *think* I have some of the answers, but am not sure. **After I wrote the above I had another thought (very dangerous, yes I know): If there are separate Oil Service and Inspection indicators do they operate sequentially with each other or are they two totally separate monitors with separate monitoring processes? There's only one reset "Reset Service Indicator". When you reset it goes to the next thing sequentially.
The intervals are based on fuel burned, that's why they don't correspond to a specific mileage and 15k is a rough interval. That's why the harder you drive it, the lower the mpg, the sooner you get an interval.

I'm trying to determine why I am seeing the "Inspection" milage indicator countdown in the SIA display instead of seeing an "Oil Service" milage indicator. (the SIA counted me down to my Inspection I at 25,600 miles, I had the work done, the shop reset the SIA and it shows/has always shown "Inspection" since then as it counts down (5K miles to go with 35K miles on the odometer) |

It was displaying "Inspection" and not "Oil Service" when I took it in for the work at 25,600 miles. That I'm 100% sure of. Is it even possible that they could reset it and it would show "Inspection" again? (well, it happened, so it's possible. Let's figure out how) |

The only thing I can think of is that it was reset twice by mistake.

From my research (see link below), you can only reset the SIA if "reset" is displayed meaning conditions have been met ("coded minimum consumption limit has been reached"). It seems you'd have to wait until at least 10 liters of fuel until you can do that. Hard to imagine that happening when it's in for work (10l = 32 miles of hooning at the very least)
http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...6&postcount=18 I do my own oil changes which are yearly at about 7,500 miles. I could do a reset now to get it back on the oil service indicator cycle and then this coming October (which will be a year) reset it again so it will be back on the proper Inspection cycle. How does that sound for a solution? |

I use PA software for reset. There are two options to reset oil service or inspection. Maybe both was reset.
Are you resetting with key or software? Key method needs to be within range as you noted on one post. |

I haven't done any reset. My shop did the reset with the Inspection I work at 25,600 miles. Perhaps they did a software based reset and reset the Inspection monitor. I'll call and ask how they do their resets.
For folks that do their own oil changes, how do you manage the SIA intervals? Do you reset the Oil Service interval whenever it expires (but perform the oil changes on your own schedule) and when the Inspection interval expires that is when you perform the Inspection work? |
