HGMS Z4M ESS supercharger build
The BMW Z4M came standard with the S54 engine out of the E46 M3. At the time of its debut, it was in the top of its class, but up against the modern machines of today, it can feel out-dated.
The solution? The ESS VT Supercharger kit. This customer brought in his Z4M craving more power, the ESS kit certainly delivered. 20120730-IMG_0738 by HG Motorsports, on Flickr 20120730-IMG_0739 by HG Motorsports, on Flickr 20120730-IMG_0755 by HG Motorsports, on Flickr 20120730-IMG_0758 by HG Motorsports, on Flickr 20120730-IMG_0764 by HG Motorsports, on Flickr 20120802-IMG_0779 by HG Motorsports, on Flickr 20120802-IMG_0787 by HG Motorsports, on Flickr 20120802-IMG_0797 by HG Motorsports, on Flickr 20120802-IMG_0804 by HG Motorsports, on Flickr 20120802-IMG_0827 by HG Motorsports, on Flickr 20120802-IMG_0829 by HG Motorsports, on Flickr |

Sweet, but I doubt the owner will get much use out of it.

throttle body 3 looks alittle rough?? these cars have a lot of oil vapour, these cars REALLY need a catch can, you can see the build up their on number 3, anyone with a bown z4m really needs to add a catch can as adding boost only makes this worse, on our cars with FI we do not want the octane lowering effects of burning this vapour, its a mix of fuel, vapour, oil and makes a real mess.
Re op, what was the point of buying this kit and not revving it to 7900?? i take my car to redline on pretty much every chance possible.... on a centrifugal setup changing @ 6500 is pointless... love you car, treat it like a queen but drive it hard when you can, im not saying abuse the thing but use the rev range and enjoy that wonderful motor. vt1 is a great kit but it REALLY needs to be worked to get the benefit.....

interestingly it looks like ess has made the case intake quite abit smaller.... i hope this isnt a cost saving measure..... i prefur the old intake, with the clear throttle body bulges, sharper edges and just general bigger size. Interesting decision ESS.....

im pretty certain these cars fail smog tests with the s/c in place us side, or at last vt2 would as you have to have euro headers...
however we have an emissions test over here in the UK yearly.... my car with the stock cats in the s pipe passes every time and well within the margin.....

ALSO op please dear god do something about the header tank overflow pipe/breather
youve got it bent up over the TOP of the s/c intake, if you remove the s/c intake this piece neatly fits under the intake without bending it, pushing it, whatever and keeps the same shape it does around the stock filter box, the way you have this orientated firstly looks shit, and scondly your needlessly stressing that pipework, look at my above pic and you see you can route this differently, keeping the stock shape, no stress to that line and it looks 10x better.

Even if the tailpipe emissions are within the compliance range it doesn't matter. It has to have that damn CARB (California Air Resources Board) stamp and Executive Order number or no go. It just doesn't make financial sense I guess to jump through the hoops for a smaller production level car. |

I am sure I am gonna get blasted for this. But CARB is there for a reason, I just got back from Ensenada (where almost no car has a smog device, unless it is new) and the air was terrible, and I am use to LA air (which is pretty bad compared to say Seattle's air).

The problem is that even if you do pass tailpipe test, you still need to pass visual. Otherwise I completely agree with you in that these laws are there for a reason and I'm glad they're there. I just wish they would let you do whatever you want (within reason/safety) as long as you don't pollute more than the standards allow for the year of your car.
