My mechanic works at the shop (where my sister is a service advisor) that I have all of my work done and is BMW certified in both the cars AND bikes and has worked at both the BMW car and bike dealerships. Since I own both, I trust his advice. He said 5,000 miles on the Z, and the recommended 6,000 miles on my r1150rt. He said he has pulled the heads off of cars that were well outside the 4/50 service window and went by the "recommended" 15k interval and found nothing but sludgy filth. He also recommended Mobil-1 instead of the BMW(Castrol??) oil for the Z. For the bike, he said the synthetic blend from BMW was more than enough and those bikes. I suppose everybody has his/her own personal experience and there are definitely differing opinions. But, since he lives, breathes and eats all things BMW and I know him personally, I trust him.

I think I will stick to 5k oil changes. It's cheap insurance and I'll be able to sleep better at night.
