I like it!!
Same as the intermittent wiper, there's probably some clever guy who invented this in his basement who'll be suing Ford in ten years for stealing his idea.

i'm glad ford is pioneering the way for even more people not to care about throwing their car doors into the car parked next to them.
"at least my car is ok... the other guy won't notice the 4in long vertical dent right next the door handle he uses multiple times a day."

it def looked like it protected both cars.. and you would really have to put some force into actually DENTING a car with a door like that.

it's not so much that there isn't any damage, or that damage is minimized...
the issue is that this product essentially makes it ok. it's ok to not care about the car next to you. it's ok to not teach your kids repect of other people's property. even in that video, neither the adult, nor the child, checked for damage to the victim's car. i'll just keep my paranoia and park out in BFE.

I think most people would still be careful but it's a "Just in Case" I mean. people have airbags.. doesnt mean they WANT to use them.

At least with this protection....days when the wind gusts grab your door....or yours hands are too full to completely catch your door final resting position.....people can stress less. I can see no fail here aside from things getting hung on the plastic and breaking. ( like our cup holders). |

this is true; however, opening your door into someone else's isn't a life threatening situation. also, i don't think people will WANT to ding somebody's door... they just won't care if they do.
it's like the people who throw trash out of their vehicles... if no one sees it, it's ok to do. god forbid somebody litters in their yard though. this product reduces/eliminates the chance of damage to their own cars, so screw the cars around it. again, this is just my $.02 worth.

I don't think this is something that will be highly marketed, and if that's the case people won't even know. They're too dumb to check if they're hitting the car next to them then they're too dumb to notice that thing, let alone figure out what it does.

Seems like that's only foolproof if it's mechanically linked to the door mechanism, if it's electronic I would expect it to fail within a year or two. Hell even if it's mechanical it probably has a cam arm that's in the door, and they'll make it out of plastic which will snap. One day, "oh no, how did my door dent that car? Oh well..."

I assert that there are 3 dents in my driver's door that wouldn't be there if this were on the other cars. Bottom line, that = successful idea.

Maybe.....I'd hope they'd be made as good as my Datsun regulator then.....its 41 years old and still works perfect ! Ok, enough nutswinging on Datsuns, lol.
One thing that might not be apparent here to some folks that live in areas of the country that still have some real estate within the lines of their parking spaces.....places like California DON'T. There is not enough space between the lines for even a careful person to open their door without coming dangerously close to the car next to them....or even thinking of letting go of the door. So if your hands are full of papers, briefcase etc......its a touchy thing...every-time. I wished I'd have invented this contraption....its genius. |

The spaces are so close that the even with the smaller doors on a 4 door sub-compact you can't even get close to the first stopping point on the door. And if you weigh over 120 pounds good luck trying to squeeze in or out without grinding the door into the car next to you (or grinding and banging up your hand). This isn't a question of carelessness, it's a question of ****ty parking space layouts. And since that's the reality, the question becomes how to minimize the damage potential. I understand the point about inducing carelessness, but that's not the issue in areas with these kind of parking "spaces". For places with micro parking spaces it's simply a hell of an idea. Even careful folks like me have one hell of a time not beating the **** out of cars next to them when their just inches away. |
