Upsizing tires/wheels
I'm thinking about upsizing from 17" to 18". Is there any benefit to having a staggered configuration as opposed to just having the same size for all four tires?

Go for the staggered setup. I am not certain if there is any benefit, but I sure love the look of the wide 255/35s on the rear of a Z4.

I was thinking of going either 225/40R/18 on all four tires or doing the standard staggered 225/40R/18 on the front and 255/35R/18 on the back.
So are the wider tires on the rear just for show? I read somewhere that you actually get more tramlining without much improvement in handling. |

Tramlining is a function of what tires you install. I just put on a set of Michelin Pilot Sports PS2s in the sizes you are looking at (225/40R/18 255/35R/18) and there is no tramlining at all.

I switched from staggered 17"; 225 f, 255 r to a 19" fitment using 235 f and 275 r. The grip level doesn't seem much higher but the tramlining is virtually gone and the ride actually improved, quieter and softer.
Previous tires were top of the line Bridgestone REO50A non RFT. A highly rated tire that I did not like at all. The 19's are Falken 452's......not a top line tire but they actually work better on my Zed. I think it's not the size but the individual tire that's the key. PS2's, Goodyear F1's, Kumho's and Falken all seem to be sensational on Z4's Oh....the huge 275's on the rear.......they look VERY nice. |

I don't think I've posted any rear shots, just a side view with the CSL style 19's. I did just see a pic of that size tire somewhere on Zpost in the last day or two.
