My original Stubby post from another site....
Here it is....
I just got this in the mailbox today I think it's the perfect stubby..... This one is 3" and... it's also available in 5" I'm out in the country a bit where AM can be a little week... it seemed to be just fine. It may be a little weaker than OEM but I'm not sure since I rarely listen to AM radio. pic across rear deck.... It's avalable here - Mangowalk E-bay store & the close up... The base match is perfect... even the material is an exact match. You would think it's OEM And on top of that.... it's flexible

Step 2 - unscrew OEM antenna from the base. Step 3 - screw on stubby antenna. I have to confess that I never play my FM so I have no clue how well it works - I just like they way it looks PS - aren't you glad we are here to help?

Ah, that's a lot simpler then I thought. I was afraid I'd have to rip out the trunk lining and unscrew something to get it off =P Thanks for the help

Also, it's a bit of trial & error to find something that matches the base cleanly. - they are relatively inexpensive, so it's no big deal if you get one & decide you don't like it.

I agree with, Intgr8r, DocRisk. That one's a little too flashy for my tastes. I thought the whole reason for getting a stubby antenna was to make it less noticeable.
I remember people mentioning back on z4um that the antenna is more for AM whereas there is a strong FM receiver located somewhere in the trunk. So the stubby antenna does slightly reduce your AM reception but doesn't really affect FM. Someone mentioned to me that whichever receiver is picking up the better FM signal (either your trunk or your antenna) is the one that is used to transmit. Make sense? |

My FM signal is not diminished at all & the odd time I listen to AM it works fine in most areas. (IIRC the other FM antenna is behind the rear bumper.)

Thanks guys! Yeah I gotta agree that one is a bit flashy and that's kind of why I wanted your opinions - I am gonna go with the regular short stubby.

I also heard that the external aerial antenna is used for the BMW Assist features (Roadside Assistance). I haven't had to use it since activation, so I'm not sure how the reception would be for the shorter antenna. BTW, I also bought the shorty antenna from Mangowalk and the delivery was very quick (seller is located in northern WA). Definitely looks OEM (perfect greyscale colormatch).

I typically only listen to 8-Tracks, however, I did install the Bimmian Micro recently for appearance and it really changes the curves of the car imo when viewing from the side and rear - less focus on the antenna.

Ordered my 3" stubby from Mangowalk :P should be here by the end of the week hopefully. I tried the twist off stock antenna from base with no luck. I'm assuming I grip base and turn it counter-clockwise to loosen? (Dont want to break anything) Thanks

Yeah, it should screw right off. You won't break anything so long as you're not bending at the same time.
