Is this a MAJOR problem or just cosmetic?
I was out under the hood today and found that the tops of both stuts are cracked. It looks like rubber.
Looking at my manual I think it is piece number 1. My thinking is that it is just cosmetic and number 7 (upper spring plate) is the load bearing member. I want to fix it but, Is the car drivable? |

Serious cracking
Your Z4 is driveable for the short term but the bearing hats should be replaced in the near future. It's normal for shallow cracks to develop around the inside diameter of the shock piston, but your pictures shows a deep crack outside the inner diameter. Time to replace the guide support (bearing hat).

Already replaced and a strut bar installed to keep this from happening again.
The first one took 90min from start to finish, the second strut took 32min from start to finish... |
