Sport Button retro fit
Before I start...Mods I normally would not cross link to another z forum but I think that this thread is very educational for those of us who do not have the sport package option. If this violates any rules please remove.

OK.. the connector is there!
I thought about this all day... got home, removed the ashtray and button panel. I didn't see any cable. I then unsecured the gear lever cover and moved it to the side... I then started feeling the cables and noticed that the one on the left had two ends... one went to the gear shift lever and the other went under the carpet... I took a hook and pulled the carpet up next to the gear shift lever.... GUESS WHAT... There it was the connector for the sport button... My button is on order... when it comes in, I'm just going to plug it in and see what happens... I then have to cut the hole, but that's easy enough... I'll keep you posted... so far, this has taken about 15 minutes... Chuck I

thanks for the part number.
I took the shifter cover off but could not find it, so I took out the console out and searched under the carpet...still can't find it. I also dont have the premium package so that may have something to do with it. I am going to dig some more tomorrow. |

Here's another picture...
Darn... here's another picture... grab the wire that goes up to the shifter lights (where ist says P, R, N & D).... follow that down to the left.. you will have to stick you fingers down in there... you will come to a junction... one going to the right to the DME and one going to the left (mine was under the carpet)... you should be able to pull it out... I pulled it back through the same hole in the carpet that the wire going up the shifter uses. Hope the picture helps... Chuck I

thanks for the pic, I went and cut the carpet apart and checked all of the wires, looks like I don't have the plug. Keep all of us updated. If anyone needs help taking the console out pm me.

JRA, what's the manufacture year and month of your Z4? I thought there was only one cable harness.. Let me do some research... Thanks, Chuck I (the Moderator may want to move this to one of the other forum sections...)

Gearl, I had the Dinan S1 package put on my car last year.. That included all new springs and struts... I just looked at this sport button issue as a challenge since no one had figured it out.. It looks like folks have been playing with the idea since 2005... Chuck I..

The sport button doesn't change suspension, it changes the power curve a little bit. Makes the gas pedal more 'touchy' in the lower RPMs from what I can tell.

that was my point it is kind of like taking off the 3.0si badge and replacing it with a M badge. When you order the sport package from the factory it comes with both the suspension and the shift change but it appears he has already upgraded his suspension.

The button changes the throttle and steering response, and changes how the car shifts with non-manual transmissions. Those things have nothing to do with the suspension or 18" tires. Adding a working button isn't a just cosmetic change that labels the car as something it's not.

remembering that yours was an 03, as soon as I saw that the wire did not spilt I figured that it had to be build date related lol. good luck to you though. guess I will have to pony up for ess software. |
