tried that today and fucked it up... i don't know why. when i did it on my E46 it turned out beautiful... i talked to my wheel and tire shop and they have this crazy army paint thats semi gloss black and basically an epoxy that they said you can literally throw rocks at and it won't even so much as scratch it. so i might just go that route.

I'm having a buddy paint mine. I should have them back this afternoon. I'll post pics when I do.

2006 3.0i w/aero kit sans fog lamps. I used SEM spray paint for the grill rings (O'Reillys).

Wet sand is really good for making sand castles as well...
Looks real good on your white Zed... I think I would like a gunmetal finish on my black Zed though

I can't believe intgr8tr hasn't been here yet.
After purchasing the bav grille surrounds and sending them back, I used his method - $5 roll of blackout tape and couldn't be happier with it. Here is a link: http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewto...t=184&start=15

After researching it, I went with tape route and used the black-out tape avalible from Auto Zone.
Even up close, you cannot see the seam. It will never chip! And it was only $12. Plus, it's completely removable should I change my mind in future.

Its Vinyl Trim Blackout Tape. If you go to any auto parts store and ask for it they'll have it. Originally for the chrome trim around the windows on most cars, but adapted for the grills.

The easiest way is to apply the tape directly to the chrome grill, just the same way you'd apply tape to anything. Starting in a corner of the kidney is a good idea for hiding the start/stop seem. You might need to be careful as you curve the tape arround the corners of the kidney.
The most effective way (a bit more complicated, yet yeilds better results) is to: 1. Remove the front bumper cover from the car. 2. Then remove the two chrome grills from the bumper. 3. With the grills removed, you will have a MUCH easier time applying the tape to them. Again, you might want to disguise the tape seem in a corner/curve in the kidney. 4. Then reassemble. There are clear & easy threads here ion Z Post about removing the bumper cover and the grills. Good luck!

i tried taping them and couldnt do it, i didnt paint the grills in the first place because knew they would chip in a couple of weeks. I wish aftermaker makers would make black grills or cf for the mz4, so we can bum off of them
