S54 - Vanos Unit Questions
Hi all - hoping to gain some knowledge regarding the Vanos issue for our cars.
- Does anyone have experience with the Dr. Vanos upgrade for our cars? If so, can you please elaborate? - When is the right time to think about getting the Dr. Vanos upgrade? I can barely hear any metallic clicking noises (however some rattle does exist around 2,700 - 3,500 rpm) - no where close to the videos on youtube though. Currently have 72k miles on the car Thanks! |

Which specific Dr. Vanos upgrade(s) are you referring to? I've done the Beisan upgrade (Vanos exhaust oil pump disc with smaller hole for hub), rattle kit, and seal kits. I don't hear the metallic marble noises around 2800 rpm anymore. Not sure what caused that noise (the slack between vanos disc and hub or the excess play on the splined shaft), but it's super quiet now after the upgrade. I did it mainly for the peace of mind of minimizing the hub tab failure than anything else - all the others were "while we're in there" sort of things to do.
I had skipped the solenoid upgrade because that can be easily replaced if and when it failed. While doing the job, I found that the upper chain guide was already in bad shape at only around 44K miles, so looks like only a 50K-mile replacement item For more pictures of my upgrade, see this => http://www.zpost.com/forums/showpost...&postcount=730 |

I just completed the COMPLETE Dr. Vanos replacement system on my M Coupe. All new Cryo exhaust cam , anti-rattle kit, bolts, oil pump. everything ....
A vanos can go at anytime. after talking with them several times I wanted it all done at one time and never have to worry about it again.

The rattle at ~3k rpm is caused from too much play between the oil pump disk holes and the exhaust hub tabs. Read this |

I wanted a complete peace of mind on the car. It cost me $2,600 for everything plus the install.

I broke an exhaust hub tab at about 90k miles and replaced it with the Dr. V "C300".
$850 I put in a Dr. V rebuilt Vanos at about 117k since my upper chain guide was toast and I figured if I was going to take the Vanos off, I might as well put a rebuilt on. $1400

The top one has the tensioner pushing on the back side of it, and that's the part that wears, not the side the chain runs across.
Go figure. If the cost isn't too bad, might as well go for all 4. You get a timing cover reseal out of it.

Yea, the guides themselves are dirt cheap.
It's the labor that's nuts. Just the top one requires pulling the Vanos and exhaust hub. Doing the others requires removing the timing cover. Not sure how to do that, but I wouldn't be surprised if it involves first taking off the bumper cover and then keep taking things off until you hit block.

The oil pan needs removal from what I gather. Some say you can get out without removing oil pan. I think this job with rod bearing replacement since oil pan is dropped.
