Apex PS-7
I saw on Facebook that Apex has a new "PS-7" wheel design. Looks pretty good!

Probably look like the VMR's because they are probably made by the same place in China that makes the VMR's!!!

The biggest difference is that they offer 19" wheels in the PS-7, so those that want to goon up performance in favor of aesthetics (kidding) can now opt for a lighter 19" wheel without spending a fortune.

Bullshit aside, I think these wheels look great and welcome the new look from Apex. Can't wait to see them on one of our cars!

They do look pretty similar to EC-7's, but the spokes aren't parallel like they are on the EC-7's. There is a greater distance between them near the center of the wheel, and they start to converge as they make their way to the barrel.
I wouldn't mind seeing Advan RS/RZ-like designs from Apex. Can't complain about another lightweight option though.

The equipment/process used to make a wheel is the same whether it's a mesh style, 5 spoke, etc. (assuming it's cast vs. cast, 1 piece vs. 1 piece, etc.). So really your point about them looking the same because they are probably made by the same factory is not exactly true. Touchscreen phones and mesh wheels are widespread and similar looking because it's a popular style for consumers, not because some of them are made at the same factory. That being said, I just don't like the style of the PS-7. Narrow/tapered spokes that are very curvy = VMR 710, to my eyes. I get that all mesh wheels will categorically have a similar appearance. But at least the ARC-8 is significantly different from the V703. Here's BBS' RG-R (8 spoke-pair, like ARC-8 and V703) - apart from BBS being seen as the "original" you can see that all 3 of the 8 spoke-pair designs are different. Previously, their 7 spoke-pair wheel (EC-7) was significantly different from VMR's 7 spoke-pair design, and still visually somewhat different from other reps like ASA GT5 and Bremmer Kraft BR-05. If APEX can make their ARC-8 and EC-7 have the same number of spokes and similar design as the V703 and RG-R while still being visually obviously different, I feel like they should have carried that trend over to the new PS-7 which seems way too similar to the V710 IMO. Just my 2 cents. |

Y'all do realize, that none of APEX's wheel designs are their own?
The ARC-8 is an almost exact copy of the BBS RC design sans the center cap? The EC-7 is a copy of BBS's motorsports wheels? PS-7/VMR's wheel is an exact REPLICA of BMW's E46 CSL/ZCP wheels, which is designed by BBS?* And y'all also should realize, that people who buy APEX wheels aren't exactly concerned with what their wheels look like, or which wheels they look like, right? It's not about "looks" with APEX as much as it is about being the lightest, strongest, AND most affordable wheel designed for performance enthusiasts. By copying someone else's design or designs that may have passed into public domain*, they can pass the savings of having to pay for expensive 3D modeling, design engineers, molds, and manufacturing tools straight to the consumer. Y'all complaining about it "looking like VMRs" here aren't exactly the type that would want or need the lightest and strongest wheel possible for a reasonable price IMO and are completely missing the point. At this point, you should ask yourself, if you are buying the APEX PS-7 wheels because it's 4 lbs per corner lighter and probably significantly stronger than both the OEM BMW CSL cast wheels, or VMR's replica of the same wheel style (but 6 lbs lighter) with virtually any offset for any fitment you can want...Thus allowing one to run the widest track fitment while saving up to 20 lbs of unsprung weight, which is roughly 100 lbs of sprung weight. Not because it's a knock-off design. p.s.: I suspect when BBS went bankrupt and restructured about a decade ago, all the patents and copyrights to their designs went into public domain (or someone bought it up and are selling them on the cheap).

If I recall the FI wheels were designed after the bankruptcy/restructure. So BBS likely still holds the rights to the design. Not likely they'll be copied in the near future unless someone is willing to line the pockets of BBS's IP lawyers.

The VMR V710 and PS-7 are not replicas of the CSL wheels. VMR VB3's are the replica of CSLs. This one looks way different than CSLs to me. But the PS-7 has an uncanny similarity to V710.
