Engine Oil Test Data
A few months ago I posted that I would be testing other oils against Castrol Edge/TWS in an effort to find one that reduces lead in UOA on a consistent basis. I will post details later but, at this point I only have data on Redline 10W-60 which suggests that it should not be used. Long story short lead went up quite a bit while using it. For this oil change I am testing Penrite 5W-60 which on paper looks promising. It's thinner than Edge 10W-60 cold and thicker when hot while offering a very solid anti-wear additive pack.
I am not going to debate the use of any oil here only share data, discuss away.

where do you get these tests done? I'll be changing my oil again when I get back from TDY and after seeing a few posts on this already it's got me curious!

Just got an interim Redline sample back.
Mileage was low < 2k but a good percentage was track time. the critical numbers were: lead: 1 ppm copper; 2 ppm

What were your numbers with TWS under similar condition?

Just about the same.
Overall redline was slightly better, but that was just one sample. ...statistically insignificant.

Don't want to start another oil thread so bring this one back.
I switched to Liqui Moly 10w-60 GT1 last oil change. Blackstone analysis came with surprising results. The two previous analysis was TWS. I will update post on my next analysis. |

RobMCoupe, thank you for your post above.
I have also switched to Liqui Moly 10w-60 GT1, in the summer of 2012, and I am soon due with my third oil chance since then. Considering my location, Blackstone is out of my reach. Consequently, so far I had no professional feedback on how the S54 is coping with Liqui Moly, other than the oil temperature being about 5 deg. C lower than Castrol TWS, at the sustained highway speed of 110 mph. I read opinions on some message boards, that due to Liqui Moly being more viscous than TWS when cold, it may worsen the rod bearings issue of the S54 engines. However, your Blackstone report seems to say a different story. Liqui Moly may actually be at least as good as Castrol TWS for S54 engines, if not better. It will be great if you post here any Blackstone analysis you may do in the future. |

Also think it is interesting that the viscosity (when tested after 6k miles) is lower than TWS and below their "Values Should Be" range. Thank you for posting, I am interesting in seeing the next test as another data point will help with the proof.
