Surprised by the lame bidding action. Didn't see the replacement engine or its color as negatives either. Maybe just the wrong time of year.

There are about 6 coupes listed for sale on zpost. When I had placed mine for sale, I knew it would take longer than expected since you need to find the right buyer. I see these priced 28k-33k, but I bet they sell for 22k-24k. You can check ebay's solds, you'll see similar numbers. The vehicle has its limitations - it isn't a super exotic, it isn't a valuable classic, it doesn't make loads of power. If anything, it is great at the road coarse, and seems these cars go through quite a few owners.
I'm on my second one, and know going in that to sell again will be a longer process than normal. If I know I can pick up a Z4M coupe for around low 20s (there are many around the US), I'm not going to spend 30k on one. That is just me...

Awesome value
Exactly. As much as a few of us may cherish these little coupes, they just don't command higher prices. Maybe, like the S54 Z3MC, they may climb in value at some point. But don't hold your breath...
I just bought a car very similar to this one in the auction. Paid $24k. A few more miles, but more options and a few upgrades. The car is in excellent condition. In my opinion, these Z4MC's are an outstanding value for a fun road or track car. I happen to now own two. A unique low mileage garage queen for the road, and now a sweet black car that will be turned into a track rat. At the price point for these cars, it's in the same range as an E92 M3. Personally, I'd rather have the smaller Z chassis, but have to admit, the S65 is tempting. Many would prefer the M3. |

I think I know the reason why.
This car is hard to drive..... Now stay with me, I own one. But I also own a few others. The wife drives an Audi TT VR6 (Audi's R32) and I daily an Audi S8. We also have a Cooper Turbo. All of these cars are much much easier to drive than the M-roadster. The M cars' steering is heavy. It takes bumps hard. Its throttle is sharp (and sport mode is undriveable in stop and go city driving). Its loud and brash. And, finally, it sits like a motorcycle. HOWEVER... its fun. It handles like nothing else I've had stock and it puts a smile on my face. That is why I own it. Trips around town, top down, kicking the ass end around corners. Happy. But, I drive 94 miles in my round trip commute each day. I promise you, the Z4M is quite possible the worst car I've own to make that drive. You beg for the S8 after 30 miles or so. Even the TT and Cooper are easily dailies if you want them to be and the are. Light steering, easy shifting, good enough handling, quick pacing and mildly comfortable. Its the price though. A Lotus Exige is in the same catagory imo. A streetable but really track car. But with the price of the Exige, its purely a track toy for the affluent. With the price of the Z4M in the 20's, it becomes realm for alot of people. I'd assume alot of people whom make this their only car. And when they drive it for a while, realize its a better track runner than jogger, they part with the car through no fault its own, because not being what it isn't. This leads to this car really not having a home for price and not having consistent owners. Well I Mark Twain'd the hell out of that thought Last edited by tecnicaeleven; 12-29-2016 at 08:51 PM.. |

100% agree with your Mark Twain'ing
Spot on in comparison to an Exige. To add, this vehicle doesn't have much of an aftermarket, relatively speaking. You're bound by mainly suspension and cosmetic upgrades, while having to live with drivetrain anomalies. Sure, there are supercharger kits, but very costly. Now, bring the price down to low 20s, and things start looking better for a second toy car. These don't seem to stay with owners who use them as dailies.

Possibly running into bank loan issues now as well with the age of the car? Most banks won't loan out on vehicles older than eight years, so for these cars to get top dollar on sale (private buyer not CarMax etc.) you most likely need a private, all cash buyer. So, you need somebody who really wants the car, and has $28k-35k in cash to pay for it. You're looking at an extremely small set of people who meet both of these requirements.
Let's face it too, it's an eleven year old BMW which quite frankly scares the pants off most people in regards to maintenance/reliability. |
