A-Post Plastic Sticky
My 2003 Roadster was always kept in garage since new. I am 2nd owner. Non smoker as was previous owner. I noticed recently while cleaning the interior (black) that the a-post plastic interior pieces are sticky, more so towards the top. Tried cleaning with all kinds of cleaners, paint thinner etc. Nothing seems to remove it. I even bought a set to replace them on ebay and they are also sticky and scratched. Anyone else have this issue and how did you solve it. Can't believe I'm the only one. Thanks in advance.

So far I have not had this issue, but I believe it is a known one. You won't be able to clean/remove it as it is the plastic starting to disintegrate. You solutions are to one- replace the part or two- wrap it. If you wrap it you could sand or try harsher chemicals to get it smoother before placing the wrap.
The good part is that a brand new piece will only set you back about 40 bucks(unless you have extended leather - that piece is a ridiculous $550 bucks).... http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/part...667&series=E85 |

Sorry to bring the bad news, but the realoem.com prices for (interior trim, anyway) are EXTREMELY outdated. I wanted to replace a fabric-covered A-pilar cover on my e86 and the price at the dealer was $400-500. So I'm keeping the mildly scuffed part instead. I guess e85/e86 parts are getting rarer.
Anyway- use realoem.com to find part numbers, but don't trust the pricing from the early 2000's. |

I recently cleaned an old gadget of mine with very sticky plastic surface with 90% isopropyl alcohol. I don't know what's in paint thinner if it's any different, but the IPA worked amazing. Maybe you need to take off the trim, soak it in a bath of IPA and scrub harder till it becomes bare plastic? Or hope that it doesn't melt it...

Sticky Plastic Update
I used the 2 pieces from ebay as a sacrificial lamb. I rubbed the sticky part with lacquer thinner and it appears they are painted and the thinner does take that paint off to reveal a shiny plastic core. So it appears that the paint is failing and becoming sticky. Now I need to find a matching semi-gloss paint to repaint and match existing interior and I may be all set.

OP wouldn't be having this particular problem with the leather. OP would instead be having different problems with the leather drying up and the glue coming loose. Quote:
It it were me, I'd wrap those suckers.

Nope. My A-pillar is covered in the same anthracite black FABRIC that makes up my headliner. And apparently it's made of unobtainium. Luckily just has a minor rub that rubs my OCD the wrong way. I'm learning to deal with it.

Update on the Sticky A-Post
I stripped both A-Posts and center piece above windshield with lacquer thinner in a pan and just brushed it on and the paint came off easily. The plastic core has lots of imperfections from the molding process so I wet sanded and sprayed with sandable filler primer and then wet sanded smooth again. Primed with a light coat and then top coated with Color Bond LVP Refinisher Spray in #258 BMW Black. Its specially made for interior plastics. Paint matches perfectly with the existing interior color. It now looks fantastic, easy to do project could be done over the course of a day.

Interesting thread... I too have the sticky interior trim panels, mainly the driver's side A pillar and top. I've cleaned it up mostly using Goo Gone and protecting with some Armour All. Looks pretty good. Found all 3 pieces on ECS to the tune of $150 so I'm trying to decide if I can live with the finishless trim or need new pieces. What a strange coating BMW put on.

My Z4M coupe is fine but my E46 330i sedan centre cupholder etc got all sticky.I was told its the protective clearcoat on the plastic deteriorating. I removed and fine sanded some parts and sprayed with silicone dressing and they seem ok.

Removed the 3 trim pieces from my Z4 and ended up cleaning/stripping the damaged clearcoat with Goo Gone & a little elbow grease. Washed pieces off with dish soap when I was satisfied. Then used Meguiars Black Plastic Restorer to even out the finish, turned out to be a great idea as I was pleased with the result. The plastic polish was only $7.99 vs. $150 in new plastic parts.
