BMW Rises in J.D. Power 2019 Dependability Study. 5 Series and X3 Tops Their Segments

COMMENTS

J.D. Power has announced its 2019 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) and BMW ranks 7th this year, up from its 8th spot last year. To come up with this ranking, J.D. Power polled nearly 33,000 owners of 2016 model-year vehicles about their three-year ownership experience.

J.D. Power also breaks it down by individual vehicle segments. Overall, the Porsche 911 is the highest-ranked model in the entire study. For BMW, the 2016 5 Series and X3 were the top models in their segments -- the Midsize Premium Car and Compact Premium SUV, respectively. The 2016 X1 was runner up in the Small Premium SUV category.

I'm more disappointed at Honda.
Once the industry leader, along with Toyota, it's fallen below industry average and, worse yet, behind Ford.

Not surprised to see Land Rover down near the bottom but was surprised to see Volvo close to them. I guess that as electronics get more and more complex, some brands which were once famed for their reliably, go full circle

I'm gonna go on a limb and say that reliability excludes powetrain?! Otherwise this report is next to useless / inconclusive if one is questioning the overall reliability of mentioned models, specifically those that consist of 2-3 or more different types of powetrains/engines.

F10 has 3 different engines that most of us here can easily attest to doubting or questioning them as being ranked highest reliability in it's class.

I know Porsche has typically been near the top of the dependability survey, but is that because their owners likely put the fewest miles on the cars in those first 3 years of the survey?

Volvo is a pretentious Chinese made car. You get what you pay for.

I read somewhere that Porsche implemented a lot of processes from the Toyota quality system. Don't know if true or bust..

Take these results with a grain of salt, it is not an indication of long term reliability. Really who thinks a Toyota, Honda of Volvo won't give you long term durability. They wrote the book on it.

Keep in mind that Volvo has been introducing a whole range of completely new models (and new platforms) the past few years. With so many brand new designs in the line up it's not surprising that reliability has taken a hit. The real test for them will be how this number changes over the next few years as the product line matures and the launch issues get worked out.
