The DO NOT REMOVE! paper filter in the top lid of the air box....
While installing my new BMC performance air filter, I noted there is paper filter integrated in the top lid of the air box....with a note on the side of the paper filter stating....DO NOT REMOVE!
It appears it is not removable. How is it replaced? Duration? Thanks -

Is a carbon filter.
No need to replace, as it's in the clean air stream after the paper filter below. Its not available as a separate part.

WHS ^^
Some have gone to dealer for warranty work and were denied by not having that filter there. There is a thread on it. Also there is a tuner out in Vancouver who removed and dyno'd 1hp increase. I've removed it and put it back. Can't feel any difference. Might as well keep it there. |

IIRC there was a TIS addressing removal of the charcoal filter and resulting rough idle problems. Some have reported idle problems and others have not after removal.

Interesting that the SIB only addresses the M models. My 07 Si came with a charcoal filter, maybe removal of the filter in the N52 didn't create airflow problems. Also, my car did not have an air diffuser in the top lid (#2) as shown in the SIB for the M cars.

Not sure if my 2004 had one or not, at least I don't think it did by the time I got the car. I have the AFE intake now though.
