That is a common issue. I would call BMW and see if they will cover replacement of the mat since it is a safety item. They have done so on a lot of Z4's.

You may be in luck with an '06. I have an '07 and BMW said sorry charlie when I complained about my Takata passenger occupancy sensor mat failure
