For me, the relevant issue that does separate lesser blends from the best of them is whether they have a lot of grain whisky (column still produced). I think that Compass Box is a vatted malt - a blend exclusively made w/different single malts (I heard theat JW Green was also one of these). There are also some blends that specify a higher percentage of single malt (IIRC, Teachers is one of these, perhaps also the Grouse?). Personally I like the variety of single malts, so I haven't really explored blends, but most of the bigger brands have very nice high-end versions. I've had Ballantines 12 and 18 year old, both very nice (Ballantines is my go-to blend, for nostalgic reasons). I'm also intrigued by some of the historical recreations, like the Shackelton blend, or some of the prohibition-era recreations; at some point I'm probably going to try them.
