Last time I did the vanos on a mates M3, it was doing the exact same thing. I took it apart 4 or 5 times before I finally caught into what was going on.. (could probably do it in my sleep now) my mates m3 had a head gasket let go, so there was water in the oil.. I thought I had gotten it all, turns out there was some left... Finally vacated all the water contaminated oil and then it worked like a charm, maybe some food for thought if you've done a head gasket.
