VANOS Procedure question

Hello

During my removal of VANOs, following BESIAN systems procedure to the teeth. I noted an issue

I had TDC lined up at the crank
The timing holes on the cam are pointed up (I did note my exhaust cam is quite a bit off) so I rotated the cam to point up

Took the VANOS off, and noted the spline gear on the exhaust side is fully inside the exhaust hub, instead of all the way out per the BESIAN procedure

Does it matter where it is on removal? as I have to replace the exhaust hub and chain guide anyways which means I have to remove the exhaust spline.
