There's a little panel in the center front of the top that looks like a sunglass drawer.
I'm pretty sure that's where the lock motor is.
I hear there's a hex socket in there to manually lock/unlock the top using an Allen wrench that comes with the BMW standard tool kit.
Pop that cover off and see if parts fall out.
I've never looked in there, so I can't say how much access it gives you.
