Something that doesn't get a lot of love in the U.S...the Toyota/Lexus 1uzfe. 4.0 V8, DOHC, 6200 redline(6500 for the VVTI version). Not a power house by any means, but torquey as a V8 should be and a lot of fun in my 95 SC400 project car. Sadly, the V8 SCs only came with automatics, but manual conversions exist and I'm planning on one. With a straight through exhaust, this thing sounds really, really good, and lowered on coilovers and poly suspension bushings has made the Luxo coupe a real driver.
