This, I agree with. On the E46 forums if you mention an interest in CSLs/ZCPs or BBS-LMs, you're immediately told how everyone has them. That seems true, if you're browsing the internet. In real life, I've seen one other BMW with CSL-style wheels, a guy with a black e46 M3 cab, over a year ago. Not exactly a groundswell.
Truth is, I wouldn't care if everyone did have them - they still look good. There's a pic from a UK meet on z4-forum where 3 or 4 M Coupes are pictured, all with CSLs; it's a pretty nice picture.
