It's not hit or miss, some people are more sensitive to noises while some have gotten desensitized by it.

A friend was riding in the MZ4 Coupe one time, and as we were driving around he commented "does your car always make this much ruckus? I think your shocks are bad."

I got so used to the little noises that the GC coilovers make I "tuned" it out, whereas someone who's used to the soft, supple, cushy ride of his F30 328i heard every single rattle and roll. Wasn't until he mentioned it and I actively listen for it did I notice that it does make some rattle-y noise when I go over bumps.
