well.. quick update, I decided to go buy a $10 solder iron and some 60/40 solder. I fixed the plate pretty well by dripping solder into the crack where it was burnt. See OP's pic above, the black spot on the plate.. Mine looked identical. Anyway... happy to report that with new socket and new bulb and now solder, it's fixed and working. I'll update this thread if it goes out again.. $50 for bulb, socket and solder was way cheaper than ordering a new tail light assembly.
TLDR: New Bulb + New Socket + Soldered Plate = Fixed
