Consensus on raising or lowering motor for VANOS removal?

I'm not totally sure I'll have to get into a vanos repair, but I do have an oil leak coming from the area. I suspect it's the solenoid o-rings or vanos gasket, could potentially be the tensioner but there is oil above it, so I'm thinking it's coming from something higher up.

I need to get it cleaned up as best I can and then see if I can tell where it's coming from. Is there one particular thing that is more notorious than others for creating a leak up in this area?

But if I do decide to pull the vanos and check cam gear bolts, hub tabs, make the typical improvements with Beisan parts, so on and so forth, it is better to raise or lower the engine to facilitate getting the unit off?
