I'm going to give the "lockit" approach a shot. Keeping your head in the same place, which means keeping the rest of your body from moving, seems very important to smoothness and control. The car goes where you're looking, and if you move your head off the line you want to be on (say you're focusing on the apex or exit) and your head moves, then it's hard to keep that line.

Keeping the head steady is a constant with all sports--golf, tennis, baseball, football, etc. Move your head and you either miss the ball or are way off target.
