I think it was all in my head. I went to a reputable indy and even i couldn't hear it when i tried to show him.
I've also since had her opened up for a full diagnostics on the VANOS, valve clearances checked and cam (VANOS) bolts replaced with the new ones etc. etc. The report I got back was that the car is mechanically perfect.
Given the car was new to me, I think I just wasn't used to the charecteristic noises it makes.
