I wondered that myself. When I bought my 2006 M Roadster in 2012 at ~32,000 miles, the Inspection I hadn't been done so I did it myself, with the help of a friend with an E46 M3 who had a shim kit. I don't recall removing any spark plugs, particularly because if I had I would have had six more holes to block with shop towels.
