So when I was a young man I was into the street drag racing scene and I don't condone that anymore. I still do appreciate street rods though. Having said that in my experience the quickest and cheapest way to get quicker was a set of gears. Going from 3.73 to 4.10, 4.11 or 4.56 made a shocking distance. I recall after getting a set of 4.56 gears having a stop light run with a Yamaha 650 and taking him to the next set of lights......the trade off was my highway speed was limited to about 50-55 mph because of the change in cruising RPM. So the answer is what is your application and be aware of the trade offs.

My car originally had a 3.36 I think, I ended up going back to a 3.73 as it was the most all around drivable set up, still quick but you could travel at reasonable highway speed.
