So here's what I've found:
a) There is a tear in the intake boot...a small one in the smaller hose. Ordered a new one. However, online I see a lot of people replacing this part without and the symptoms are not the catastrophic failure I'm seeing; so I suspect my issue is more than that.
b) I've got a fairly pedestrian OBD2 scanner. But the two codes it throws are:
P1632 Throttle valve adaptation conditions not met
P1635 Throttle valve adaptation; Lower mechanical stop not adapted
