The method of looking through the speaker opening behind the driver seat will work well for some, but if you are unfortunate enough, the label may not be visible unless you have a fiber optic bore scope or similar. That was my case, and I wasted a lot of time.

Then I remembered I had an old BMW Scanner 1.4.xx and XP laptop - a legacy from the 2005 325xi which I once owned. It works for the E85/E86 platform too. It's not a full featured coding app, but it allowed me to call up the BT module and find the Pass Key. Over the Winter I plan to get a little deeper into coding and diagnostics, but for now BMW Scanner 1.4 allows me to read and reset quite a few error codes and change some parameters.
