That's a great question. One probably not asked often enough. The issue I'm concerned with is how the sound varies when heard from a distance outside the car vs the way it sounds reverberating in the cabin. What may sound wonderful to some from outside may sound awful to the same people from the inside. I suppose it's that difference that I'm concerned about.

For instance I love my friend's M5 with aftermarket exhaust. Sounds amazing. When we go to big car meets, lots of people look when they hear his car and I haven't yet seen a disapproving expression. But on the long drive he'll sometimes flip the switch that changes the exhaust note so that it doesn't drone inside the cabin.

He also flips the switch to the quieter mode whenever we're in residential out of respect for those who might not be auto enthusiasts. So as you said... gotta think about others.
