They probably could have back then, but that would have meant time off work. 2 little ones and bills to pay determined that answer for me. I recently (August) saw a hand specialist, since I had picked up the guitar again. He told me that he could try, but it may be better just to cut it off.
Seriously. I haven't taken the time to get a second opinion yet....
