Thanks guys. I may try to pop them off and sand/spray them. I've also seen some nice "carbon fiber" 3M film that I think would look great, but may be a bitch trying to apply.

I've read that this is doable without removing the steering wheel, I will try to give that a go. I replaced the steering wheel on my E46 330i a few years ago; relatively easy, but would prefer to avoid it if possible; unless someone chimes in to the contrary.
