I also bought the 303 stuff and found that the cleaner was ineffective. It did close to nothing on the spots I have on my top. I have the beige top so the dirt really shows when it is concentrated in one area.
As for the protectant, I would leave it at one coat for now and when you start to notice the water not bubbling, you can repeat the steps you originally followed.
