I would guess the fuel pump is slow failing. I had idling issues with my e46 m3 and it seemed to have gone away after replacing the fuel plump. I haven't taken the z4m fuel pump apart but it's different from the e46 m3, which I'm not sure can be modified for an aftermarket like an e46 m3.
