For light to medium snow, unless you are living out in the middle of nowhere (or want to go there), get whatever you want and either deal with all season tires or get Winter tires (or even chains if in the mountains). There's a reason people all over the world buy small/medium cars regardless of where they live.

I am assuming you have been to where you are moving (for me I would visit before committing), have you seen what people are driving?
