Correct, I bought these, and its standard halogen bulbs with no ballast.
Later this summer I will be looking to get aftermarket ballasts and bulbs.
As far as the spyder halos, they're Very dim. I'm sure if you were ambitious enough, you could wire up stronger LEDs, or do a powered ring replacement.
