The front spacer is to clear the strut with the camber washers installed. With alignment pins pulled, strut all the way in (~1 degree) you could probably make it.

I would suspect you could get rubbing on the outside of the tire if you didn't have at least one degree negative camber. With out camber washers, the need for the 5 mm spacer drops. The wheel won't be as close to the strut due to lower angle stock vs washers.

The rear it's to clear the inner wheel well. Usually, you would end up with an Et27 clearance with this wheel/tire size. The spacer gets us very close to that number, with spacers front/rear have, you can rotate tires and wheels around. And have a square setup.
