The $15m benefit F1 gets from its volunteers
As a volunteer marshal attending 2/3 of the USA F1 races (Miami and Las Vegas), and in the past attending the USA F1 race each year before there were 3.

I can say that over the years, I have thought "The F1 should reimburse me for all my expenses to marshal a race". F1 actually does not put any money toward the marshals,
the Promoter of the race does (COTA owners, Miami Owners, Liberty for the Las Vegas Race).
We typically get a decent hotel discount, 2 or 3 meals a day, depending on the promoter (at least 2 meals/day), swag, transportation to the circuit (although at O Dark Thirty), and one of the best seats in the house.

I certainly am not marshaling for the money, and even though an event can cost the equivalent of a nice vacation, it is an experience and the marshal social atmosphere is great.
Marshaling also provided the opportunity to attend races outside of the USA. I have been to Montreal twice, the Dutch GP last year, and planning
to go this year.
There are US marshals that travel farther and more often than I do to foreign races (Baku, Singapore, Australia, Spa), and some of the European marshals travel to the US races,
they say the atmosphere and people are more enjoyable to work with.
