It's because it's gold. Gold is through the roof right now for pricing and gold parts for your watch are going to cost a small fortune.
Get it fixed right the first time and you won't have to do anything to it for years and years!
P.s. I just had an Explorer II serviced. Full polish, new bezel and full movement rebuild cost $1,000. BTW: This was a SS watch, not a gold watch, so I don't think the price you're being quoted is out of the question.
