I wouldn't be too afraid of a higher compression turbo engine Roffle. I had a 9:5-1 comp. turbo inline six that drove great and managed great drive-ability daily. It felt strong off boost and awesome on. Turbo lag was not noticeable in this arrangement.
It only limits how high your boost can go effectively/safely. In mine, it was at 18lbs for street and pump gas. With my efficient intercooler system I never suffered pre-detonation or heat issues.
