De-Modding
Anyone given thought to dialing it back?
I'm seriously considering it. I have precious little time to spend on the car these days. Last year was 1 track day & less than 2k kms total. I'm looking at a couple of years down the road & we'll be down sizing (condo?) I have a ton of work to do around the place the next 2 yrs & $$ to spend too. If I dial it back to something more basic I may be able to hang onto the car longer when I no longer have my garage & all my tools/equipment/lift etc. I think the first thing to go would be the Clubsports & BBK. ...maybe pickup a set of H&Rs springs (hate the thought of the OE springs) after that IDK; But I'd definitely keep the cosmetic pieces. ![]()

I think it wouldn't be anymore of a maintenance chore if you just kept the car the way it is. Changing coilovers to springs and getting rid of those lovely brakes is pointless, unless you are bringing the car back to stock completely

Keep the brakes, going back to stock isn't worth it. If you do decide to sell the car then part them out. I guess you don't want to do headers again? lol
I've thought about removing my suspension as well but I like the height of the car with it and the handling, just hate the sounds it makes. I think I am done modding as well. Maybe headers but that is a big maybe. Lets get out to some more track days and events this spring/summer. Rekindle that love affair! |

What suspension do you have that makes it noisy?

Part of the problem with it modded is I still have a TON of things Id love to do. It may come down to removing the temptation.

Its not really about the maintenance. I wont be making use of the fancy BBK & suspension, may as well be stock. It would be more of a slowwww demodding process prior to eventually selling. ![]()

So, since you brought it up MZ (sorry to go a little off topic Ian), are you suggesting that changing springs only (HR Sport) with stock shocks will net result in a significantly better ride? In what ways? Hadn't considered that before but is on a few hundred bucks so worth considering.

KW V3. During cold days (mostly winter) it squeaks until the suspension warms up. Summer time it can sometimes make a slight whoosh sound over bigger bumps (sounds like air being pushed out). I think I might just have to revalve the system, doesn't have that many km on it though, maybe 10K. The knobs and adjustments still work fine, no leaks, and you can notice the difference in settings so I don't think anything is really wrong with it.
It handles much better than stock though ... that and the slight drop make me not want to remove it. |

I went to Eibach Pro Kit with stock strut/shocks. It doesn't handle like TCK DA/SA I had on before. It is a good compromise with spring stiffness. I like the drop on Eibach which is exact drop when I have my CO. I had the car weighted and it is very balance with cross weight ~50.72%. This convinced me car does not really need COs.

Seems like one goal is to not mod any more going forward. That I totally understand. I think it's going to be a challenge of self-discipline whether you keep the car or not. Even a "downgrade", unless it's econobox or a mini-van, is going to present the temptation. Face it, you're a "modder", as are most of us here. So it's a question of managing that, which isn't easy!
I don't see the rationale of downgrading from where you are if you plan to keep the car over a reasonably long period of time. The return on selling the mods is going to be 50-75 percent, depending on what you're selling. You'll end up with a car that you won't enjoy as much when you get the chance to drive it (you'll be comparing it to what it was), and if you find time in the future, you'll want it where it is now. If you don't need the cash, it doesn't make sense to downgrade it. Even without tools, you can still enjoy the car. You'd just have to pay someone else from time to time for adjustments. If, on the other hand, you don't see driving it much at all, and then won't have a place to keep/store the car in 2-3 years--in other words you're going to eventually have to sell it--then maybe the question isn't about downgrading and keeping but rather about returning to stock and selling. In terms of $$$, you'd get a better return on selling the car and selling the mods now than later. I realize that's a huge jump emotionally since you have a real attachment to the car, but it seems from what's been said so far that's where things might be headed anyway? (Which really pains me to even write this.) But if so, financially it makes more sense to execute on that now (in the Spring/Summer) than later. If you can only have one or two cars, maybe something like an AWD Scoob would be better suited to all-around all-year duty. Those can be modded pretty easily (again, you'd have to steady your hand) but are pretty good out of the box, can be run on the track, but also have 4 doors, a hatchback, and can also haul cargo and luggage and pretty much go anywhere. Changing times, changing availability of time, and changing needs are always difficult. (I've had plenty of that myself the past year, so I get it.) I know this has been on your mind awhile, as I recall something about this in another thread from a few months back. There's no need to start on it tomorrow morning either, but it's probably not bad to have some solid plan in place within a month or two as agonizing over things long-term doesn't work out well in my experience.
